Football vs Political Parties

ACROSS THE Western world, membership of political parties is in decline.

 

In Australia, the main parties' exact membership figures are a closely guarded secret — presumably because the numbers are so low.

 

It seems political participation, especially among young people, is more likely to be in the form of joining an advocacy group like GetUp!, becoming a member of an NGO, or "liking" something on Facebook. 'Clicktavism' reigns supreme.

 

The possible exception might be the National Party, whose members are largely from close knit rural comunities and still organise themselves in more traditional ways.

 

But in general, it's the nation's football teams that people wish to join.

 

Maybe the political parties need to take a lesson?
